As one of the most popular resort towns in Croatia, Makarska has bus loads of tourists and streets full of tourist restaurants. It’s hard to pass up eating at one of the seaside restaurants as the view overlooking the turquoise water is hard to resist. But the food here is often mediocre, prepared without care and the service brusque. I’m sure there are exceptions but if you’re looking for a relaxing atmosphere with great food and friendly service then you might want to head away from the beautiful beach front.
We stayed at Villa Lelas in Makarska and the very friendly owner recommended Restaurant Roma to us. He said that’s where a lot of locals eat which is always what I look for when choosing a restaurant. Even though the restaurant is called Roma, the food is mostly Croatian cuisine which means there’s plenty of fresh fish, seafood and grilled meat as well as a few pasta dishes.
F always seems to make the best decisions when we eat out. He ordered the whole fish with grilled veges. It looked amazing and was delicious.
I didn’t order the fish because I am hopeless when eating fish on the bone. It takes me forever and usually ends up getting cold. I went for the chicken schnitzel and while I love this dish when in Austria, it just didn’t compare here. Don’t get me, it was fine, just not as tasty as the fish dish.
I regretted my decision to order the chicken almost immediately and I should have known better. In Croatia you should always order the fish! It’s what they’re known for after all.
Restaurant Roma is located up the hill past the main bus station but is worth the walk if you want a more relaxed atmosphere, friendlier service and better value than what you find down by the water. Even though I made the wrong choice with my order, I would definitely go back here and order that fish.
