I read about Macondo before heading to Hvar island off the coast of Split in Croatia. It’s a small seafood restaurant just off the main square and is known to be one of the best seafood restaurants on the island.
Although I’m not a big fish or seafood eater, I did eat fish every day while in Croatia just because I know it’s some of the best fish I’ll ever eat in my life. Macondo is known for its gregada which is a seafood stew done with lemon, garlic and potatoes. It’s a dish for two people and while I didn’t order it, I did have a piece of fish and some of the potatoes. Of course it was delicious. The potatoes were amazing and the fish was the melt in your mouth variety. The dish had around five different types of fish, none of which I recognised and my dining companions loved all of it.
I stuck to a simple grilled fish with lemon. I don’t really like when they cut the fish crossways. It seems like it’s not as tender (is that the right word to describe fish?) when it’s cut that way instead of a regular fillet. It was still nice but not my favourite fish of the trip.
Macondo is a little on the pricey side but it’s definitely worth the treat if you love fish.

Yum! Croatia is full of surprises. We loved our month there. I wish we would have known about Macondo when we were there. It looks great.
Sometimes I think it’s good if you don’t see everything because it gives you an excuse to go back
