Kailis Fish & Chips

Fresh fish and chips eaten by the water in Fremantle is one of my favourite Aussie meals. There are a few legendary fish and chip restaurants in Fremantle, Kailis’ and Cicerellos being the main ones, but I’ve always chosen Kailis as my go to fish and chips restaurant. I’ve probably picked Kailis’ over Cicerellos due to my Greek heritage and the fact that my grandfather shared a boat with George Kailis, the founder, when they migrated from Kastellorizo to Perth in the 1920s. I guess going there always reminds me of my grandfather and his struggles to migrate to a new country.

So anyway, as for the food. The fish is good and the chips perfectly cooked. I’d recommend going with the fish of the day because then you know it’s fresh and having it grilled is the best way to eat fresh fish in my opinion. Of course the battered fish is the most popular so to each their own.

Unfortunately I’d say the food isn’t as good as it once was and my local fish and chip shop is significantly better but you can’t be the location, right on the water in Fremantle, and the atmosphere. The food is good, not great, but good enough for me to return on a regular basis.

Here’s what the grilled fish and chips looks like. Not bad for $20.

Last time I went for the tropical fish and chips which included a fried banana and slice of pineapple. I won’t order that again.
